Leaded or unleaded

I've been informed that you shouldn't take any notice of the following figures and you should set up the timing to what your engine is will run at without pinking. Or take it to a rolling road and get it set-up by a pro.

The Autodata manual for the Manta states that the 2.0 litre engine from number 0355000 onward can use unleaded petrol continually if the timing is set to 7 degrees, before engine number 20E-0354999 use leaded every 6th tankful.

However the Haynes manual states "All models with 1.8 or 2.0 litre engines produced after 1980 may be successfully run on unleaded high octane (95 RON) petrol, noting the following guidelines:

18S - Unleaded fuel can be used at all times - retard the ignition by up to 5 degrees if pinking occurs.

20S - 1981 on, use one tankful of leaded fuel after every five of unleaded  - retard the ignition by 5 degrees if pinking occurs.

20E - Up to February 1985, use one tankful of leaded fuel after every five of unleaded - the ignition timing MUST be retarded 5 degrees.

20E - March 1985 on, unleaded fuel can be used at all times - the ignition timing MUST be retarded 5 degrees.
